What is the definition of ‘vlogging’?
The definition of vlogging is basically doing the action of making a vlog. It combines the two words “video” and “logging.”
Who are three current and popular vloggers? What do they each vlog about?
Casey Neistat
He vlogs about his daily adventures and things he experiences.
Roman Atwood
He posts “weekly movies” about travel and things like skydiving, snowboarding, etc. Mostly things he does in his daily life.
Jenna Marbles
She posts advice and comedy videos as well as comedic tutorials.
What are the qualities of a vlog? (name at least 10 distinctive features)
- Mission/goal behind it
- Value/message people take from it
- Niche/genre
- Target audience
- Type of cinematography
- Innovative approach
- Theme of videos
- Positive attitude
- A sense of humour
- Videos reflect the person and their interests/personality
Reflect upon the topics and personalities of these vloggers. Identify the topics/personalities. Do you think that they will have the same opinion on that topic in 10 years?
Casey Neistat
- Topics focus mainly on food, skateboarding, etc., and travel
- He is very outgoing and adventurous
- I think that he will have a very similar opinion on these topics, but definitely not the same. Nobody’s opinions will stay the same for their whole entire life. I think that he will still be interested in the same stuff, but maybe not as much or in different ways.
Roman Atwood
- Topics mainly focus on pranks and documenting his daily life
- Also very outgoing, a family kind of person
- I think that, like I said above, his opinions and topics will be the same in 10 years, just altered a little. I think he will still be a family man, making challenge and prank videos, but the content of the videos will be altered. Whether that is a different genre of pranks or whatever, I think it will be slightly altered.
Jenna Marbles
- Jenna is very comedic and likes to show that in her videos. She posts videos called “My dog reviews soap” and “My dogs eating peanut butter for 3 minutes straight.” She doesn’t like to be serious and makes a joke out of everything.
- Her videos are mostly reactions, re-creating _____, videos with her boyfriend, or joke beauty tutorials and such.
- I think that her opinions on these topics will, again, be pretty much the same. She seems like the type of person to not change things up a lot, but alter them a little.
Reflect on the permanency of online life. These vlogs will be around potentially forever, even after the vloggers have removed them from the online presence. How will these vlogs affect the future careers or future choices of these vloggers?
I think that there is a huge risk to posting vlogs, especially because they can affect your future. For example, if you post a mean video about somebody but later delete it, somebody, somewhere, will have downloaded it or saved it. And that video never goes away. When the person who posted that video goes to find a job in the future, the employers will look at your online presence. They will see that you posted that video and they probably won’t hire you. The things you post online will affect your future life, even if you don’t see that now. It’s not always negative though. The vlogs these people post show that they have experience in certain things or know about a certain topic.
If you were to start vlogging, what topics would you vlog about?
If I were to start vlogging, I think I would vlog about my adventures and just daily stuff. I don’t think my life is that interesting and I wouldn’t have much to vlog about so it might make me go places and do something interesting.
Think about the topics/issues identified in question 6, will you have the same opinion in the future?
Yeah, I think my opinion will still most likely be the same, or really similar. I don’t really change much and my life will still probably be boring in the future. My opinions pretty much stay the same and are hardly ever significantly altered.
What are the long-term...
Repercussions
Fixed public image and how the public perceives you, whether that is good or bad, and even if you’ve changed.
Consequences
Always being known to the public, especially if you have gained a large platform. You’re almost like a celebrity and a lot of your privacy disappears.
Benefits to these vloggers?
Benefits could be making an impact on people's lives. The videos providing a sense of community and people making friends based off of their interest in the same vlogger.
If you were a parent would you let your 10 year old vlog? Why or why not?
If I were a parent, I would not let my 10 year old vlog. I wouldn’t let them vlog because I think 10 years old is still too young to be able to have an influence on people. Most of the time, vloggers gain a large following, and at 10 years old your opinions and views of the world aren’t fully shaped yet. They may put something harmful or controversial or something and not even know that they shouldn’t do that or not post things of that sort. I think 10 years old is still a bit young.
Please talk about one other issue/comments/thoughts that you feel is important about vlogging that I did not address in these questions.
There isn’t much else I want to say about vlogging. But if I were to say something, it would be that vlogging won’t always have negative consequences. It can be a fun thing that shows off your personality or interests. It can be something that’s really fun and enjoyable as well.
